REDMOND — With poise down the stretch and a little help back in Bend, Bend High secured second place in the Intermountain Conference with a 73-68 boys basketball win over Redmond on Friday night.

The Class 5A No. 9-ranked Lava Bears (8-4 IMC, 16-7 overall) entered the final night of the regular season in third place, needing a victory and a Summit loss at Mountain View to jump into the second spot. Bend got its win, and Mountain View defeated the Storm on Friday, sealing for the Lava Bears a home play-in game on Wednesday.

“It’s nice to be at home and finish traveling,” said Bend coach Scott Baker. “The guys are excited to play. And we’ll just focus. That’s what we told them after the game: Be proud of what you accomplished so far, but understand that we have a new season coming. Game one is on Wednesday.”

Bryan Brown had 25 points and was 7-for-7 at the free-throw line for Bend, which will find out its play-in opponent Saturday. The Lava Bears hit seven straight free throws in the final minutes against the Panthers to claim the victory. Justin Kerr had 12 points for Bend, and Brian Warinner added 11.

For the Panthers (3-9, 9-15), Ethan Soto hit four 3-pointers en route to 21 points in his team’s season finale. Dylan Taylor had 20 points for Redmond, and Josh Hair scored 13.
