MOUNT BACHELOR — Summit’s Isabel Max beat her twin sister, Fiona, by less than a second to win the girls 5.5K freestyle race on Friday, the first day of the Oregon Interscholastic Ski Racing Association nordic state championships.

Three Summit skiers finished in the top four in both the boys and girls races to put the Storm in first place in the team standings ahead of Saturday’s 5K classic race and 3×800 relay. Bend High is second in both the girls and boys standings.

Isabel Max finished Friday’s race in 15 minutes, 33.8 seconds, and her sister followed in 15:34.7, a reversal of last year’s championship skate race, in which Fiona beat Isabel down the stretch to win. Bend’s Ann McColgan took third place in 15:52.5, Liv Downing came in fourth in 16:06.6 to give Summit another top finisher, and Sarah Kilroy of Redmond Proficiency Academy rounded out the top five in 16:42.6. Brooke Cummings was the top Mountain View finisher in 13th place with a time of 19:10.9, and Ridgeview’s first skier, Natalie Hill, took 14th place in 19:29.4.

After the first race, Summit leads the girls team standings with seven points, Bend is second with 16 and RPA is third with 45. Mountain View is fourth with 48 and Ridgeview is fifth with 56.

Unlike the Max sisters’ photo finish, Summit’s Will Lange won the boys race in 14:03.4, 27 seconds ahead of runner-up Albert Hesse of Ridgeview. Samuel Schoderbek of Summit took third in 14:42.5, his teammate Mario Cacciola came in fourth, and Max Nye was the first Bend finisher, placing fifth in 15:18.3. Quinn Olarrea was the top Mountain View skier, finishing 11th in 16:18.4.

The Summit boys lead the team standings with eight points, Bend is second with 27 and South Eugene is third with 35. Mountain View is fourth with 41 and Ridgeview is fifth with 49.

The girls and boys 5K classic races, with interval starts, are scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. Saturday, and relays are to follow starting at 12:30 p.m. However, the status of those races could be affected by the weather: the National Weather Service forecast as of late Friday called for heavy winds and snow accumulation of 9 to 17 inches at Mount Bachelor.
