BASEBALL
Beavers rally late to beat Buckeyes — Second-ranked Oregon State scored six unearned runs in the bottom of the eighth inning Friday for a 10-8 comeback victory over Ohio State as the Beavers remained unbeaten in their season-opening stint in Surprise, Arizona. Two Ohio State errors helped fuel the pivotal Oregon State rally, which included a sacrifice fly by Adley Rutschman, an RBI single by Jack Anderson that tied the score at 6-6, and a run-scoring single by Kyle Nobach. Steven Kwan’s two-run triple capped the uprising. Kevin Abel, the second of three Beavers pitchers, was the winner, and Jake Mulholland got the last two outs for the save. Oregon State (6-0) plays Nebraska on Saturday afternoon at Surprise Stadium.
Oregon falls to Loyola Marymount — Oregon’s first three batters produced a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning, but the Ducks did not score again in a 4-2 loss to Loyola Marymount in Los Angeles on Friday night. Kyle Kasser hit a leadoff double and scored on Jonny DeLuca’s single. DeLuca stole second base and advanced to third on a throwing error, then came home on Spencer Steer’s sacrifice fly for Oregon’s second run. The Lions scored the go-ahead run in the fifth inning on one of the Ducks’ five errors. DeLuca had two of Oregon’s six hits. Matt Mercer pitched six innings and took the loss for the Ducks (2-2), who face LMU Saturday night in the second game of a three-game series.
SOFTBALL
Oregon splits in tournament — The No. 5 Oregon Ducks lost for just the second time this season, falling 3-1 to No. 6 Texas A&M in a split of two games Friday at the Mary Nutter Classic in Cathedral City, California. Earlier Friday, the Ducks got solo home runs from Mia Camuso and Shaye Bowden in a 4-1 win over Oklahoma State. Miranda Elish pitched a complete game for Oregon, striking out eight in a four-hitter to improve to 4-0 this season. Against Texas A&M, Megan Kleist was a hard-luck losing pitcher as the Aggies scored all three of their runs in the sixth inning with the help of a three-base outfield error. The Ducks (10-2) play twice Saturday at the Nutter Classic, a game against Tennessee followed by an exhibition game against the Japanese national team.
Tennessee topples Oregon State — No. 11 Tennessee broke open a close game with three runs in the fifth inning and beat Oregon State 9-3 on Friday night at the Mary Nutter Classic in Cathedral City, California. A three-run homer in the top of the first inning gave the Volunteers a lead they would not give up, though the Beavers got right back in it with two runs in the home half of the first. The scored stayed at 3-2 until Tennessee’s three-run fifth. OSU had six hits and struck out 10 times against three Vols pitchers. The Beavers (9-5) continue play in the tournament today against Auburn.
