Reserve powers White Buffs into playoffs

MADRAS — Kanim Smith III exploded for 38 points and 11 rebounds, providing Madras with a spark off the bench in the White Buffaloes’ 97-86 boys basketball victory over Tillamook in a Class 4A play-in game on Saturday.

With the win, Madras (13-11) advances to next Saturday’s first round of the 4A state playoffs. The Buffs will be on the road, though their seeding in the 16-team field and their opponent has yet to be decided.

Madras built a 25-24 first-quarter lead over Tillamook in the first quarter on Saturday and gradually pulled away for the victory, led by a White Buffaloes’ bench that outscored the Cheesemakers’ reserves 57-11.

Also off the bench for Madras was Donnie Bagley scoring 10 points. Starter Kahne Herkshan had 13 points for the Buffs, and Byron Patt added 11.
