Register now for spring sports — Registration for the youth lacrosse league will close on March 5 and the deadline to register for the girls softball league is March 11. Sign ups are available at www.bendparksandrec.org or at District facilities. The lacrossse league is open to boys and girls in first through eighth grades and will be held from April 2 to June 1. Teams will practice twice a week and play eight games. Helmets, stick, mouth guards and jerseys are provided, but coed and boys league participants need to provide their own gloves, shoulder and elbow pads. The softball league is for girls 6 to 14 and will be held from April 9 to June 7. Teams will practice twice a week and most games will be held during the week. Players will need their own glove. Volunteer coaches are needed for both leagues. Volunteers must fill out an application and complete a background check and concussion training course.
Hockey
Rapids win Wine Country Face Off — The 12U Bend Rapids Green team beat the Santa Rosa Flyers 6-0 to win the Wine Country Face Off at Snoopy’s Home Ice in Santa Rosa, California, on Feb. 19. The Rapids opened the tournament with a 12-0 win over the Lake Tahoe Grizzlies, then beat the San Jose Jr. Sharks 6-0 and the Flyers 6-1 to advance to the tournament finals.
Sled Dog Sports
Bachelor Butte Dog Derby canceled — The Bachelor Butte Dog Derby, which was scheduled to be held at Wanoga Sno-park this weekend, has been canceled due to poor snow conditions at the race site. The event will not be rescheduled.
Soccer
5 Rush players make select national teams — Five Cascade Rush players and two coaches have been named to Rush Select national soccer teams. Simon Kidder and Jayce Marshall, both Summit sophomores, made the 2018 Rush Select boys program, and Mountain View sophomore Parker Gribskov and Bend freshman Lilly Lucas were named to the high school-aged girls program. Alicia Welker, an eighth grader at Pilot Butte Middle, was named to the national middle school girls program. Cascade Rush girls under 19 coach Sara Merrick was named assistant coach for the middle school program, and Cascade Rush Technical Director and Mountain View girls soccer coach Donnie Emerson was named a high school national assistant.
Tennis
ACB to host NTRP Kickoff Tournament — The Athletic Club of Bend will host the NTRP Kickoff Tournament Friday through Sunday. The event will include men’s and women’s singles as well as men’s, women’s and mixed doubles brackets as well and boys’ and girls’ 14 and under singles events. Participants may enter in up to three divisions. Entry costs $30 for one event, $50 for two and $60 for three. The registration deadline is Monday and draws will be made Wednesdays.
