Daughter of OR-7 returns to Oregon — A daughter of Oregon’s famous wandering wolf has returned after a stint in Northern California. State wildlife biologist Steve Niemela says the 2-year-old apparently gave up looking for a mate and “beelined” her way to southwest Jackson County. If she returns to the Rogue Pack, her GPS collar will again allow biologists to follow the pack’s whereabouts in its normal home range in eastern Jackson and western Klamath counties. Biologists lost this tracking ability during her winter departure because no other Rogue Pack wolf is collared. Using OR-54’s collar, biologists were able to pin three livestock kills on the pack at a ranch between Prospect and Butte Falls. Her father, OR-7, became famous earlier this decade by covering thousands of miles in search of a mate. His tracking collar allowed fans to chronicle his lonesome wanderings across deserts, highways and mountains.

4-year-old drowns in frozen pond — Authorities say a 4-year-old boy died after being rescued from the middle of a frozen pond in Maupin. The Wasco County Sheriff’s Office says a deputy responding to a report of a possible drowning extracted the boy from the pond and immediately began CPR. A helicopter took the child to the hospital in Bend, where he died Monday night. The sheriff’s office said Wednesday there’s no indication of foul play.
