The chairwoman of the Deschutes County Republican Party is challenging fellow Republican and long-time county Commissioner Tammy Baney for her seat.

Patti Adair, who lives near Sisters, filed as a candidate with the Oregon Secretary of State on Monday. She did not immediately return a phone call.

Adair has been an outspoken opponent of marijuana in Deschutes County. She was a delegate to the 2016 Republican National Convention and previously worked on Carly Fiorina’s U.S. Senate campaign and Meg Whitman’s run for California governor.

Baney was first elected to the commission in 2006. She also chairs the Oregon Transportation Commission, which sets state transportation policy, and the Oregon Housing Stability Council, which directs the state’s affordable housing agency.

Adair’s campaign means both Baney and Deschutes County Commissioner Tony DeBone will face primary challenges from the right. Ed Barbeau, a Tumalo pizza shop owner who also opposes the county commission’s handling of marijuana, announced his campaign against DeBone in January.

Only Baney, DeBone, Adair and Barbeau have filed so far. The deadline to file for the primary is March 6. The primary is May 15.
