The Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office is investigating an Oregon State Police captain after receiving an anonymous tip.

The sheriff’s office announced Thursday that it has begun a criminal investigation of Capt. William Fugate of the Oregon State Police after it received an anonymous report Tuesday evening, according to a news release from the sheriff’s office. The investigation is not related to Fugate’s employment or on-duty conduct, according to the release.

Fugate, who has worked for Oregon State Police for 11 years and is currently the agency’s public information officer, was placed on administrative leave after the state police learned of the investigation. If criminal charges are filed, Oregon State Police’s practice in the past has been to modify the administrative leave from paid to unpaid, according to the release.

Sheriff Shane Nelson said in the release that the investigation “involves a high-level commander in a professional law enforcement agency. We are in the beginning stages of this investigation and want to balance transparency with our duty to protect the integrity of the investigation.”

The sheriff’s office would not release any additional information about the investigation.
