College notes
• Nicolas Wolnick and Tatum Abadir, both of Bend, were named to Northeastern University dean’s list for the fall 2017 semester. To achieve the dean’s list at Northeastern, students must carry a full program of at least four courses, have a quality point average of 3.5 or greater and carry no single grade lower than a C- during the course of their college career.
• Bethany Priday, of Prineville, has been named to the University of Wisconsin — Oshkosh dean’s list for the fall 2017 semester. To qualify for the dean’s list at UW, a student must take at least 12 credits and earn a GPA of at least 3.75 or better.
High school notes
• Micah Capson, of Ridgeview High School in Redmond and A.J. Robinson, of Redmond Proficiency Academy, are winners of the 2018 Washington Youth Tour, an all-expense-paid trip to the nation’s capital. They were selected by the board of directors of the Central Electric Cooperative to represent the co-op this June. An Eagle Scout, Capson is a member of National Honor Society, Key Club, and Thespian Society. He is an active member of cross-country and nordic skiing, serves his local Scout troop’s librarian, and is in the process of becoming Redmond Police Department explorer. He volunteers throughout the community with his Eagle Scout Troop and church. Robinson immigrated to the United States from Uganda in 2012 and was adopted by a local family along with his sister. He is a scholar athlete involved in a variety of sports including football, basketball, baseball and wrestling. Robinson volunteers in the local community through the National Honor Society and his church. The Washington Youth Tour is a program offered by electric cooperatives throughout the nation to exemplary high school juniors. Students meet with other participants their age from across the nation and get the opportunity to discuss current issues with congressional representatives and senators.
Middle school notes
• Ayla Murphy, Declan Coetzee, Braden Sargent and Hudson Snyder, of Cascade Middle School in Bend, have won the local MATHCOUNTS Competition held Feb. 17. at St. Francis of Assisi School. Tyler Shields, of Crook County Middle School in Prineville, won for one of the top-scoring individuals not on the winning team, The team of “mathletes” and the individual top-scorers have advanced to the state competition, to be held in Wilsonville on Mar. 17. The teams from Crook County Middle School in Prineville — Meredith Cooper, Abby McNary, Tyler Shields and Elliot Wood — and St. Francis of Assisi School in Bend — Liam Gilman, Aaron Maloney, David Roe and Kinley Wigle — took second and third place, respectively.
• Hannah Tranby, a 13-year-old cello student at Cascade School of Music, has been awarded the Fortissmo award for February 2018. The Fortissimo award recognizes students in year three and above of private instruction who exhibit talent, effort and achievement and have been nominated by their teachers. In addition to private lessons, Hannah is in the Celli Belli cello ensemble at CSM, the orchestra at Pilot Butte Middle School, the All-State orchestra and the District Honors orchestra. Along with an award certificate, Hannah received a $100 scholarship toward private lessons, a gift from award-sponsor Cuppa Yo and Cascade Indoor Sports. All monthly Fortissimo award winners will compete for a $1,000 scholarship to continue music studies at CSM during Crescendo Bendo to be held at the Tower Theatre on June 2. She is the daughter of David and April Tranby of Bend.
