SOFTBALL

OSU wins 2 to close tourney — Oregon State followed a 4-1 win over Boston University with a 5-1 triumph over San Diego University on Sunday to finish with a 3-2 record at the San Diego Classic. Nerissa Eason pitched a complete game to beat Boston, allowing seven hits and striking out three to earn her first win of the season. Mariah Mazon pitched the distance for the Beavers against San Diego, striking out five and allowing seven hits. A two-run single by Missy Nunes highlighted a three-run first inning for Oregon State. The Beavers (13-8) play next at the Cal State Northridge Tournament in Northridge, California, starting with games Friday against Seattle and host CSUN.

Hard-luck no-hitter for UO ace — Oregon junior Megan Kleist threw the second no-hitter of her career Sunday, but No. 13 Florida State scored two unearned runs in the fourth inning and beat Kleist and the Ducks 2-1 in the final game of the Unconquered Invitational in Tallahassee, Florida. The loss ended an eight-game winning streak for No. 6 Oregon (18-4), which finished 4-1 for the tournament. Kleist struck out seven and walked one over six hitless innings. Jenna Lilley’s RBI single in the second inning accounted for the only run for the Ducks, who open their home season Thursday against Toledo on the first day of the four-day Oregon Invitational in Eugene.

BASEBALL

Beavers complete sweep of Hartford — Trevor Larnach hit a sixth-inning grand slam and Grant Grambrell pitched seven scoreless innings Sunday to lead undefeated Oregon State to a 5-0 win over Hartford and a sweep of the four-game series with the Hawks at Goss Stadium in Corvallis. Larnach’s fifth home run of the season broke open a 1-0 game and provided a cushion for Grambrell (2-0), who allowed four hits and struck out six. Steven Kwan had two of OSU’s six hits. The top-ranked Beavers (12-0) are home again Tuesday to face the University of Portland.

Pitching carries Ducks — James Acuna and two relievers combined on a six-hit shutout Sunday as Oregon defeated Florida Atlantic 4-0 at PK Park in Eugene. Acuna allowed four hits, struck out three and walked none over six innings to earn his first win of the season with relief help from Parker Kelly and Kenyon Yovan. Spencer Steer drove in two runs for the Ducks, putting the hosts ahead 1-0 with a sacrifice fly in the sixth inning. Steer made it 4-0 in the seventh with an RBI single. Oregon (7-3) has won two of three games in the series, which concludes Monday.

Kobe Bryant is a winner in retirement, too — The former Los Angeles Lakers star won an Oscar in the animated short category for “Dear Basketball,” a poem he wrote after ending his 20-year career on the court in 2016.
