The Bend man injured in a car crash last summer that killed his friend was sentenced Monday in Deschutes County Circuit Court for bringing alcohol to a party before the fatal crash.

Jason Richy Soto, 20, pleaded guilty in February to one count of furnishing alcohol to a minor. He was sentenced to 18 months probation and 5 days in jail, for which he will get credit for time served. As part of his probation, he was ordered to complete 100 hours of community service, not possess or use alcohol and complete an evaluation for alcohol abuse.

Soto was a passenger in the same vehicle as Daniel Bazan on Aug. 12 when Bazan crashed into a tree near Bend High School. Bazan was killed in the crash.

Bazan, 18, was a popular three-sport athlete at Bend High School before his graduation in 2017. He was killed when he veered off NE Ninth Street between NE Emerson and NE Alden and hit the tree.

Soto, currently a student at the University of Oregon, was the only other person in the vehicle at the time.

“It’s a tragic case for everyone involved,” Soto’s defense lawyer Andrew Doyle said Monday.

District Attorney John Hummel said there is evidence that Bazan drank alcohol prior to driving, but his impairment level at the time of the crash is unknown. High speed was ruled the primary cause of the crash.

A full investigation including a blood test was deemed not necessary following Bazan’s death, according to Hummel.
