BASEBALL
Balanced Ducks beat Florida Atlantic — Seven different Oregon batters drove in runs, including two each by Spencer Steer, Daniel Patzlaff and Ray Soderman, and the Ducks downed Florida Atlantic 10-4 on Monday in the final game of a four-game series with the Owls at PK Park in Eugene. Cullen Kufka, the first of four Oregon pitchers, allowed three runs on four hits over 5 1/3 innings for his second win of the season. The Ducks, who won three games in the series, open a four-game home set with UC Davis on Thursday.
FOOTBALL
Raiders release troubled player — The Oakland Raiders released linebacker Aldon Smith on Monday after his latest run-in with the law. The Raiders retained Smith’s contractual rights even as he spent the past two seasons on the NFL’s suspended list. But the team decided finally to cut ties one day after San Francisco police said authorities were searching for Smith in connection with a domestic violence allegation. Police said Monday an arrest warrant has been obtained for Smith stemming from allegations that he assaulted a woman on Saturday night.
SLED DOG RACING
Iditarod rookie is early leader — Twenty-two mushers had reached the Rainy Pass checkpoint by midafternoon Monday after the first day of racing in the 2018 Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race. They were led by a rookie, Alaskan Jessie Holmes, who paused at the checkpoint for just 16 minutes before continuing up the pass with 16 dogs. Sixty-seven teams departed from the official start in Willow on Sunday on the 1,000-mile race to Nome on the state’s west coast. The Rainy Pass checkpoint is 142 miles from the starting line.
