A 36-year-old Powell Butte man died Monday evening after a car he was riding in crashed on Powell Butte Highway.
Jason L. House was a passenger in a white 2006 Hyundai Tucson driven by 25-year-old Samantha L. Toews, of Powell Butte. A 9-year-old girl was riding in the back seat.
Toews was traveling west on Powell Butte Highway at about 7:30 p.m. when she crossed into the oncoming lane and rolled the car multiple times at a curve in the road at the intersection of McGrath Road, according to the Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office.
House, who was not wearing a seatbelt, was ejected from the car during the crash. Toews, who was wearing a seatbelt, was significantly injured and the 9-year-old girl, who was also restricted in the car, had minor injuries.
Bend Fire Department responded and quickly transported all three occupants to St. Charles Medical Center in Bend.
Upon arriving at the hospital, House was pronounced dead as a result of injuries sustained in the crash, according to the sheriff’s office.
Speed and failing to negotiate the curve are believed to be the cause of this crash, according to the sheriff’s office. Intoxicants are also being investigated as a contributing factor, according to the sheriff’s office.
