A 21-year-old Madras man accidentally shot and killed himself with his handgun just before 5 p.m. Friday.

Alfredo “Freddy” Martinez-Urieta was in the passenger’s seat of a vehicle parked in the 100 block of Jefferson Street in Madras when his own weapon went off, according to Madras Detective Steve Webb.

The driver of the vehicle drove Martinez-Urieta to St. Charles Bend, where he was pronounced dead.

Madras Police responded to the hospital and began their investigation, which closed this week with no criminal charges.

Webb called the shooting “just a really sad, unfortunate event.”“What it comes down to is unintentional discharge of a gun,” he said. “There was no criminal element.”

The identity of the driver, and other information, was not released by police as “a courtesy” to Martinez-Urieta’s family, Webb said.

The news was late in being released because a Madras Police office manager was off-duty for several days, Webb said.
