Bend rider reaches final at U.S. Open

VAIL, Colo. — Bend’s Ben Ferguson finished sixth in the halfpipe semifinals Thursday at the U.S. Open snowboarding championships to advance to Saturday’s 10-man final.

Ferguson — who finished fourth in the halfpipe at the 2018 Winter Olympics in South Korea last month — posted a score of 80.50 in Vail to reach the final.

Kent Callister, also of Bend, finished 14th (59.62) and did not qualify for the final. Gabe Ferguson, Ben’s younger brother, finished 26th (31.12) and also did not advance.

Japan’s Ayumu Hirano, the 2018 Olympic silver medalist, placed first in the semifinals with a score of 92.37. U.S. rider Chase Josey was second (89.12), and Scotty James of Australia — the 2018 Olympic bronze medalist — finished third (87.25). Reigning Olympic champion Shaun White of the U.S. did not compete.

Saturday’s halfpipe final is set for 1 p.m. Pacific time and can be viewed live at events.burton.com/burton-us-open/live-webcast. A tape-delayed broadcast is scheduled for FS2 at 5 p.m. Saturday.
