CORVALLIS — A third-quarter dry spell for Mountain View and a deluge of fourth-period free throws by South Albany resulted in the end of the line for the Cougars on Thursday.

The No. 6-seeded Cougars went without a field goal for nearly four minutes in their Class 5A boys basketball consolation semifinal game at Gill Coliseum, while the No. 3 Rebels rode a 10-0 surge to grab a six-point lead. And in the fourth quarter, South Albany hit 17 of 24 free throws to secure a 72-60 win and advance to the fourth-place game.

Mountain View (19-7 overall) opened the game with six straight points to build what would be its largest lead of the game, but the Rebels responded with a 9-0 run and led 13-11 after the first quarter. In the second, South Albany (21-6) went ahead 26-20, but an 8-1 run by the Cougars allowed the Intermountain Conference champions to head into the half tied 30-30.

Mountain View, though, went cold from the field in the third quarter, and the Rebels’ 10-point run gave them a 45-39 lead going into the fourth. Then, the Cougars cut the lead to four before South Albany answered with consecutive layups on its way to the consolation win.

Ian Amoroso paced the Cougars with 14 points. Matt Van Tassell added 13 points, four rebounds and four assists for Mountain View, and Sawyer DeMeyer contributed 10 points, five boards and three assists.

South Albany, the second-place team from the Mid-Willamette Conference, will play Friday morning against No. 1 Silverton for fourth place.
