FOREST GROVE — Sisters High put a scare into the top seed in the Class 4A boys basketball state tournament at Forest Grove High School on Thursday, but costly cold stretches by the No. 8 Outlaws allowed No. 1 Banks to pull away for a 46-38 quarterfinal win.

“What I told them was the only thing we didn’t do very well was shoot the ball,” said Sisters coach David Godfrey. “I’ll take (allowing) 46 points any day of the week against Banks. We battled.”

Sky-Em League champion Sisters (17-9 overall) will play No. 4 La Grande in the consolation semifinals at Pacific University at 9 a.m. Friday. Banks (24-2) will face No. 5 Valley Catholic in a 6:30 p.m. semifinal game at Forest Grove High School.

The Braves, champions of the Cowapa League, advanced to the semifinals for the first time in program history despite shooting 34 percent from the field.

Banks kept the Outlaws at bay with stout defense that included seven blocks and six steals. The No. 1 seed also outscored Sisters 26-14 in the paint and 12-2 in points off the bench.

Banks led from the outset as a Dalton Renne layup triggered a 10-2 run to open the first quarter. The Outlaws, who shot 28.8 percent for the game, missed their first seven shots and were 2-for-12 shooting in the opening period to fall into a 10-4 hole. Sisters’ deficit widened to 20-11 midway through the second quarter as again the Outlaws fell into a slump. The Braves opened a 30-19 advantage in the third quarter courtesy of an 8-2 spurt. Sisters, though, clawed back, and a late jumper by Zach Anderson cut the lead to 32-28 heading into the fourth.

“We hit a good groove, a rhythm, coming back and got it to within 32-28,” Godfrey said. “But then we had two turnovers in a row. And in a game like this, that’s huge.”

After Banks scored the first eight points of the final period to lead 40-28, the Outlaws made one last comeback. Anderson and Jack Berg accounted for eight straight points to get Sisters within 40-36. But the Outlaws missed five of six shots down the stretch while the Braves made 4 of 4 free throws in the final moments to secure the win.

“In games like this at the state tournament, it’s about the little things,” Godfrey said. “We had three or four times we would get a deflection and we’re going for the ball and we just don’t get it. Little things like that. But I’m real proud of the kids. We hung in there, had a shot at beating the No. 1 team in the state.”

Ty Horner paced Sisters with 14 points, 12 rebounds and three blocks. Anderson finished with 10 points and nine boards, and Berg totaled seven points, four rebounds and three assists. Blake Gobel and Dalton Renne carried the load for Banks, combining for 29 points, 17 boards and five blocks.

“Our kids have been pretty resilient,” said Godfrey, whose team would advance to the fourth-place game with a victory over La Grande. “If we play well defensively again and on’t get some key turnovers and shoot the ball better, I think we’ll be OK. La Grande’s a good team, like all teams at the state tournament. But we still have something to play for. We still have a trophy to win.”
