BASEBALL
Oregon edges UC Davis — An unearned run in the bottom of the seventh inning proved to be the game-winner for Oregon. Parker Davis struck out seven over three scoreless innings of relief Friday night to preserve the Ducks’ 5-4 win over UC Davis in the opening game of a four-game series at PK Park in Eugene. Kyle Kasser had three of Oregon’s 11 hits; the Aggies had 12 hits. Three UO pitchers combined for 17 strikeouts, including 10 by starter Matt Mercer, who allowed 10 hits and four runs (two earned) over 52⁄3 innings. The Ducks improved to 9-3. The series continues Saturday with a doubleheader.
Beavers drop opener to Fullerton — Oregon State scored two runs to tie the game at 3 but eventually fell 5-3 to Cal State Fullerton on Friday at Goss Stadium in Corvallis. Adley Rutschman hit his first home run of the season in the sixth to cut the Titans’ lead in half, and Andy Armstrong drove home the tying run on a double to left in the seventh. However, Oregon State watched the game — and their perfect record — slip away thanks to a pair of solo home runs hit by Fullerton’s Sahid Valenzuela and Ruban Cardenas in the top of the ninth.
Softball
OSU opens tourney with sweep — Oregon State won both of its games Friday on the opening day of the CSUN Tournament at Cal State Northridge. The Beavers started with an 8-3 victory over host Northridge, scoring five unearned runs with the help of four Matadors errors. Kayleen Schafer drove in two runs and Shelby Weeks and Alysha Everett each scored two runs for OSU. Later, the Beavers downed Seattle 5-0 behind the two-hit pitching of Meehra Nelson, whose eight strikeouts included seven of the first nine batters she faced. Jessica Garcia had three hits for Oregon State against Seattle. The Beavers (15-8) play two games again Saturday, against Seattle and Texas Tech.
Grand slam propels Ducks — Mary Iakopo’s grand slam highlighted a seven-run fourth inning for No. 6 Oregon in a 9-1 win over Weber State on Friday in the Ducks’ opening game of the Oregon Invitational. Jenna Lilly was 2-for-2 with three RBIs to back the pitching of Maggie Balint, who allowed three hits and no earned runs over five innings to improve to 5-1. Oregon (19-4) plays two games in the tournament today, against Weber State and Montana.
Dog sledding
Poor weather causes logistical challenges at Iditarod — Poor weather on Friday caused logistical challenges for mushers in the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race. A low ceiling was preventing small airplanes from delivering food to Eagle Island, one of only four checkpoints on the Yukon River. Race officials told mushers that they should carry enough food to last them for the 122 miles of trail between the checkpoints of Grayling and Kaltag, Anchorage television station KTVA reported. Defending champion Mitch Seavey and Norwegian musher Joar Ulsom were the first to reach the checkpoint in Grayling on Friday afternoon, with Nicolas Petit not far behind.
Skiing
Shiffrin clinches overall World Cup title — Mikaela Shiffrin won her second straight overall World Cup title, finishing third in a giant slalom in Ofterschwang, Germany, on Friday. Ranked fourth after the opening run, the Olympic GS champion from the United States improved a spot and trailed winner Ragnhild Mowinckel by 0.74 seconds. With five events remaining, Shiffrin holds an insurmountable 603-points lead over Holdener in the overall standings. Shiffrin is the second American female skier to win multiple overall titles. Lindsey Vonn won the sport’s most coveted prize four times.
