Bend snowboarder places 4th at U.S. Open

VAIL, Colo. — Bend’s Ben Ferguson finished fourth Saturday in the halfpipe event at the U.S. Open snowboarding championships.
Ferguson, who was also fourth in last month’s Winter Olympics in South Korea, posted a score of 83.24 in the 10-rider men’s final that featured a 22-foot halfpipe and a best-of-three-runs format.
Japan’s Ayumu Hirano, the 2018 Olympic silver medalist, won the contest with a score of 89.62. Raibu Katayama, also of Japan, finished second (86.75), and Scotty James of Australia, the 2018 Olympic bronze medalist, finished third (83.62).
Shaun White of the U.S., the reigning Olympic champion, did not compete.
In the women’s field, Chloe Kim of the U.S., who won the gold medal at the Pyeongchang Games, won her third straight U.S. Open with a score of 85.87.
