Man dies in crash near Prineville

A 58-year-old Hillsboro man died when he lost control of his pickup on a turn and rolled 500 feet near Prineville on Friday night, according to a news release from Sgt. Ryan Seaney of the Crook County Sheriff’s Office.

The driver of the pickup, identified as Gary Weingart, was not wearing a seat belt in his 2000 Chevrolet Silverado and was ejected the from pickup, Seaney said.

Weingart was driving south on NE McKay Creek Road just north of the intersection with NW Gerke Road about 9 p.m. when he failed to negotiate a curve at that location, which is about three miles north of Prineville. The truck left the road and rolled, coming to a stop on its side, Seaney said.

A witness called 911 and when responding, deputies found Weingart in a field north of the truck; he was dead.

Seaney said speed and alcohol are likely factors in the accident.
