Basketball
Bend reaches state unified basketball tournament final — The Bend “Beastie Bears,” a unified basketball team composed of Bend High special education students and “partners” drawn from the rest of the student body, lost to West Albany, 55-45, in the final of the Unified State Championship Tournament, held in Forest Grove Friday and Saturday in conjunction with the OSAA Class 4A basketball tournament. The Beastie Bears opened with a 36-28 victory over the Roseburg All Stars in the semifinals Friday.
COBO to host advanced training session in April — Central Oregon Basketball Organization will host advanced training sessions for boys and girls in fifth through eighth grade on Tuesday evenings from April 3 through 24. Fifth-and-sixth graders will meet at Mountain View High School from 6 to 7:30 p.m. and seventh-and-eighth graders will practice from 7:30 to 9 p.m. Registration costs $92 for Bend Park & Recreation District residents and $110 for nonresidents. Cycling
Chris Horner to discuss pro career — Chris Horner, a Grand Tour champion cyclist and 2012 Olympian, will discuss highlights from his 25-year racing career at Widgi Creek clubhouse in Bend on March 15 from 7 to 9 p.m. The event is free and open to the public, although attendees are asked to RSVP at http://signup.com/go/DVYowLg. Doors open at 6:30 p.m.
Golf
BPRD and Lost Tracks to hold junior league — Bend Park & Recreation District and Lost Tracks Golf Club will hold PGA Junior League Golf for boys and girls 14 and younger this spring. Kids will play in a team-scramble format on Saturday afternoons and receive instruction from teaching pros on Wednesdays from 4 to 5 p.m. Advanced skills are not required, but participants should have access to a set of golf clubs. Team jerseys and golf balls are provided. The season will run from April 25 to June 16. Registration costs $149 and is available at www.bendparksandrec.org.
Lacrosse
BPRD in need of coaches for youth league — Bend Park & Recreation District is still in need of adult volunteers to serve as coaches for seven of its 45 youth league teams. The league includes boys and girls in first through eighth grades. The season runs from April 2 through June 1, and teams meet twice a week during the nine-week season. Prospective coaches must attend a volunteer orientation/training session on March 22 and complete a volunteer application, background check and online concussion awareness training. Rugby
COCC beats Willamette at home — The COCC Bobcats beat Willamette University 65-5 Saturday in Bend. Skyler Paulson scored 22 points for the Bobcats and Dalton Chambers scored 11. COCC next plays in the Pacific Coast Challenge Cup Playoffs, which will be held at the California Maritime Academy in Vallejo, California, March 24 and 25.
Soccer
Rush announce 2018 tryout dates — Cascade Rush will host tryouts for U11 to U14 players (born in 2005 to 2008, as well as seventh-graders born in 2004) on May 12 and 16 in Bend. The May 12 session will be held at Morning Star Christian School, and the boys will start at 10 a.m., followed by the girls at noon. The May 16 session will be held at Three Sisters Adventist Christian School, and the boys will start tryouts at 4 p.m. and the girls at 6 p.m. Tryouts cost $20, and players must register ahead of time at www.cascaderush.com.
Track & Field
Registration open for COTC spring/summer programs — Registration for the Central Oregon Track Club Cheetah Cubs (for ages 6-10) and Middle School/High School Cheetahs (for ages 11-18) is now open at www.centraloregontrackclub.com. The Cubs program costs $100 and runs from May 7 to June 21. The middle school and high school program starts May 21. The cost is $120 for middle schoolers and $80 for high schoolers. Partial scholarships are available and there is a discount for families registering multiple children. Experience is not required. Instruction is offered in sprint, middle and long distance, throws, hurdles and jumping events. The Cubs will practice twice a week and the older participants up to four days a week. Water Sports
Bend Oregon Outrigger hosts new members meeting — Bend Oregon Outrigger, a Hawaiian-style paddling organization for competitive and recreational paddlers in Central Oregon, will hold a new members meeting at 6 p.m. On March 22 at Tumalo Creek Kayak & Canoe. Practices, which will begin April 2, are held on the Deschutes River and start at 5:30 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays, and 10 a.m. Saturdays. Meet at Tumalo Creek Kayak & Canoe. No experience is needed and paddles are provided. The club, which has been active in Bend for about 20 years, will train new paddlers and participants should expect a good core and arm workout. Races for experienced and novice paddlers begin in late April and are run in Oregon and Washington by Pacific Northwest Outrigger Racing Association. The cost for a season membership is $150.
