SOFTBALL

Ducks romp twice — Cherish Burks’ three-run homer highlighted at 13-run second inning for Oregon in a 17-1 run-rule victory over Bryant University of Rhode Island, the second of two wins Sunday for the Ducks on the final day of the Oregon Invitational in Eugene. Earlier, Miranda Elish improved to 10-0 with an 11-strikeout one-hitter in Oregon’s 7-0 win over Montana. Shannon Rhodes knocked in four runs in opener for the sixth-ranked Ducks, who went 5-0 for the tournament and take a 23-4 overall record into a three-game home series with UCLA to kick off Pac-12 play beginning Friday.

OSU’s win streak ends — Texas Tech scored three runs in the first inning and went on to beat Oregon State 4-1 Sunday on the final day of the CSUN Tournament in Northridge, California. The loss ended a six-game winning streak for the Beavers (17-9). Camryn Ybarra was 2-for-3 and Shelby Weeks had an RBI single in the third inning to lead OSU offensively. Mariah Mazon pitched a complete game in the loss, giving up seven hits while striking out three. The Beavers open Pac-12 Conference play with their first home games of the season, a three-game series with California starting Friday.

BASEBALL

Beavers win without Casey — Playing their second game while head coach Pat Casey serves a four-game suspension, the Oregon State Beavers on Sunday defeated Cal State Fullerton 5-4 at Goss Stadium in Corvallis. The Beavers scored four first-inning runs and won for the second time since the Titans ended their 13-0 start and 22-game home winning streak on Friday night. During Friday’s game, Casey was ejected for arguing with an umpire; he was suspended for four games by the NCAA for making contact with an umpire, which means he will also miss OSU’s first two games at California next weekend to open Pac-12 play. The top-ranked Beavers will take a 15-1 record into Friday’s first game of three games at Berkeley.

Ducks drop finale to UC Davis — Oregon’s winning streak ended at five Sunday when UC Davis beat the Ducks 9-7 in the last game of a four-game series at PK Park in Eugene. Jakob Goldfarb had a home run and two RBIs to lead Oregon. Ray Soderman had three hits for the Ducks, but he grounded out with two runners on in the bottom of the ninth inning to end the game. The pitching standout of the game for Oregon was Parker Kelly, who struck out six over three hitless, shutout innings. Kelly is yet to give up a run this season and has struck out 23 batters over 14 innings in nine appearances, all in relief. Oregon (11-4) hosts Gonzaga on Tuesday.

TENNIS

Federer opens Indian Wells with 2-day win — Roger Federer completed a rain-delayed debut match at the BNP Paribas Open on Sunday with a 6-3, 7-6 (6) win over Federico Delbonis of Argentina. On Saturday, Federer led 6-3, 2-2 when the match was delayed by a heavy drizzle 56 minutes after it began. Federer, who earned his fifth title at Indian Wells last year, saved a set point in the second-set tiebreaker and advanced to face Filip Krajinovic on Monday. Marin Cilic, the 2014 U.S. Open champion who lost to Federer in the final of this year’s Australian Open, eased to a 7-5, 6-3 victory over Marton Fucsovics. Taro Daniel, a 109th-ranked qualifier, upset five-time Indian Wells champion Novak Djokovic 7-6 (3), 4-6, 6-1. Djokovic was makings his first appearance since being stunned by Hyeon Chung at the Australian Open. Djokovic sprinted out to a 5-2 lead against the 25-yard-old from Japan, but his mistakes began to add up and he finished with 58 unforced errors. It was the earliest loss for Djokovic at Indian Wells since a first-round exit in 2006. Gael Monfils upset No. 15 seed and 2012 runner-up John Isner 6-7 (5), 7-6 (3), 7-5. Other seeded players who lost were ninth-seeded Lucas Pouille, who fell 6-4, 6-4 to Yuki Bhambri; 14th-seeded Diego Schwartzman, 7-5, 6-4 to Marcos Baghdatis; 21st-seeded Kyle Edmund, 6-4, 6-4 to Dudi Sela; and No. 24 seed Giles Muller, 6-3, 7-5 to Pierre-Hugues Herbert.
