Panthers, Cowgirls split softball twin bill

PRINEVILLE — Scout DeMain did a ton of damage with just two swings of the bat, both in the same inning.
DeMain hit a three-run homer and a three-run double in Redmond’s nine-run fourth inning, leading the Panthers to a 14-12 win over Crook County in the second game of a nonconference softball doubleheader Monday on the Cowgirls’ home diamond. The game was called after five innings because of darkness.
Crook County won the first game — the season opener for both teams — 20-10, as Emma Ackley and Abby Dalton combined for six hits, six runs and four RBIs.
Emma Lees and Kayln Martinez shared pitching duties for the Cowiglrs in the first game, which ended after six innings. DeMain had three hits and three RBIs in the opener for Redmond, which also got three hits from Jinya Glenn.
In the second game, Sydney Tolzman was 4-for-4 and Kiki Fierstos had three hits for the Panthers. For the Cowgirls, Ackley’s three hits included a triple and a double, and she had two RBIs. Also for Crook County, Ashley Owens hit a two-run homer.

Bend 10, North Eugene 9: EUGENE — Bend led all the way but did not seal the deal until third baseman Maya Elliff tagged out a North Eugene runner between third and home for the final out the Lava Bears’ nonconference victory. In the season opener for both teams, Emily Smith was the winning pitcher and also had three of Bend’s 15 hits along with three RBIs. Elliff had two hits and drove in two runs, and Erin Conrad, Kaitlyn Lapham and Jessie Wiest all also had two hits for the Bears. Smith finished with seven strikeouts over two stints — after starting the game in the circle, she came on for reliever Wiest to get the final four outs and survived a three-run North Eugene rally in the bottom of the seventh.
Summit-Hillsboro called off: Unplayable field conditions at Summit High forced postponement of the Storm’s scheduled season opener against Hillsboro. Summit is now scheduled to open its season Saturday with a nonconference game at Wilsonville.
Baseball
Bend 13, North Eugene 2: EUGENE — The Lava Bears scored four runs in the first inning, then piled on seven more in the second on their way to a season-opening nonconference victory. Austin Jones had three hits and Steve Talamantes and Marshall Davis had two apiece to lead Bend’s 14-hit attack in the run-rule win.
Crook County 10-6, Redmond 2-8: REDMOND — The visiting Cowboys won the first game and the Panthers took the second in a nonconference doubleheader to open the season for both teams.
Girls lacrosse
Sisters 19, Redmond 7: SISTERS — Mia Cook had a hat trick in the game’s early minutes and finished with five goals and seven ground balls to lead the host Outlaws over the Panthers in the season opener for both teams. Freshman Pearl Gregg had a strong all-around game for Sisters with a goal, two assists and seven ground balls.
