A recently remodeled Bend brewpub was damaged by a kitchen fire Monday afternoon, but was spared heavy losses thanks to fast-acting employees.
No injuries were reported in the small fire that closed the Silver Moon Brewing location at 24 NW Greenwood Ave., but the business will be closed until at least Thursday, according to co-owner Matt Barrett.
At about 3 p.m., Silver Moon employee Taylor Shaffery was preparing food near a range oven when she grabbed for an empty pan stored above. She didn’t get a good grip and it fell from its shelving unit, struck the quick-connect gas line below and ignited a fire.
The frying pan had to fall at just the right angle in order to pop the gas line from the wall, said Dave Howe, Bend Fire Department battalion chief .
“It was kind of a fluke thing,” he said.
Shaffery called 911, while fellow employee Scott Blackwood manually switched on the range’s hood fire suppression system, and used an extinguisher to attack the flames.
“He didn’t run around and freak out,” Howe said. “He knew exactly what to do.”
The fire was out by the time firefighters arrived.
Damage to the building was estimated at $1,000, though that figure is expected to grow, Barrett said. Silver Moon had to throw out all the food exposed to the suppression system’s extinguishing agent.
The brewpub was closed Tuesday and expected to reopen for normal business hours Thursday following a thorough cleaning of the kitchen area.
“No, we did not have a private party for the Bend Fire Department today,” read a post on Silver Moon’s Facebook page. “We DID have a small kitchen fire though!”
The brewpub closed for the summer while the space was thoroughly renovated. The kitchen features all brand-new equipment, along with other upgrades to the facility.
The business has been open since 2000, and the Greenwood Avenue location since 2005. Barrett and business partner James Watts purchased the business, which has its brewing facility in Redmond, in 2013.
“Maybe now we’ll be coming out with a fire-themed beer,” Barrett said.
