SISTERS — The cards appeared stacked against Sisters High on Tuesday.

The Outlaws’ three-run second-inning lead had turned into a one-run deficit by the fourth inning. Sisters’ starting lineup was dominated by underclassmen. The rain drizzled, the temperature dropped, and daylight was fading fast.

Yet in the waning moments of the Outlaws’ nonconference baseball game, Hunter Spor drew a bases-loaded walk with two outs in the bottom of the sixth inning to bring in the winning run in the season opener for both teams. The game was cut short by an inning due to darkness.

“For us to go out there with four freshmen and two sophomores starting, quite frankly I was worried,” said Sisters coach Reed Rainey. “I thought we’d get hammered. But the kids kept battling and hung in there. When you’re the home team in a tie game like this, sometimes good things happen for you.”

Mountain View drove in a run in the top of the sixth inning to tie the game 6-6. But in the home half, the Outlaws loaded the bases with two outs. Facing a full count with two outs, Spor drew a walk to earn Sisters the walk-off win.

“It was dark, it was wet, it was tough conditions for both teams,” Rainey said. “But we kind of put together a little rally in the bottom half to win it.”

The Outlaws scored three times in the bottom of the second inning to grab a 4-1 advantage. The Cougars, however, responded with a run in the top of the third inning and another three runs in the fourth to go up 5-4.

Sisters scored single runs in the fourth and fifth innings, but the Cougars, who pounded out 13 hits in the game, evened the score with a run in the top of the sixth. That set up Spor’s decisive base on balls in the home half of the sixth to earn the Outlaws the nonleague victory.

It was Sisters’ second season-opening win over Class 5A Mountain View in three years.

Shandon Malikowski paced Mountain View with four hits and three RBIs. Ryan Martini added three hits and drove in a run for the Cougs, and Charlie Borla finished with two hits.
