CROOKED RIVER RANCH — In cooler conditions and through a slight breeze, Bend High opened the girls golf season with a bang.

In what ninth-year Lava Bears coach Lowell Norby described as “probably our best season opener since I’ve been coach,” five Bend players placed in the top seven. As a result, the Bears posted a 349 as a team to defeat runner-up Summit by 31 strokes at the CRR Ice Breaker at Crooked River Ranch.

“I was pleased for us,” Norby said. “We easily could have gotten all of our top five (shooting) in the 80s.”

Kaylie Hayes led Bend with a 13-over-par 85 to place third in the 31-player field. Teammate Grace West was close behind with an 86, followed by Virginia Felder with an 87. Megan McCleary (91) and Anna MacLeod (92) finished sixth and seventh, respectively.

For the Storm, who totaled a 380, Olivia Loberg birdied three of four par-5 holes en route to a 1-over 73. Summit’s Sophie Dalfonsi was second with an 81.

Sammi Todd recorded a 98 to take eighth for Crook County, while Ridgeview’s Sage Schull tied for ninth with a 101.
