Four schools from Bend have qualified for the 2017-18 Oregon Battle of the Books state tournament to be held on April 7 at Chemeketa Community College in Salem. The winning teams were from Silver Rail Elementary School and Lava Ridge Elementary School in the third-to-fifth-grade division, Cascade Middle School in the sixth-to-eighth-grade division and Mountain View High School in the ninth-to-12th-grade division. They overcame 46 other teams of young readers from schools throughout Deschutes, Crook, Jefferson, Grant, Harney and Wheeler counties who competed on March 10 at Sisters Middle School in the regional book battle tournament. Comprised of up to five members, participating teams had previously won competitions at their individual schools in a series of head-to-head trivia quizzes about 16 assigned novels.
