Students burned in class — Three students suffered flash burns to the face during a science experiment at a middle school in southern Oregon. One victim was taken to a hospital Friday and the others were evaluated at the scene and released to their parents. The classroom at Fleming Middle School north of Grants Pass was temporarily evacuated. School and fire officials did not immediately reveal what substance caused the problem, but described it as non-hazardous.
Jury duty firing — A state agency has proposed a nearly $150,000 fine for an Oregon company after an employee claimed she was fired for missing work for jury duty. The Oregon Bureau of Labor and Industries found that Navex Global violated state laws that require employers to excuse workers for jury service. Sharae Epperheimer filed a complaint with the bureau after she was fired from the company in 2016. According to the bureau, Epperheimer had maintained residency in California and was called for jury duty in Los Angeles. The bureau says the company had not documented any other performance issues before firing Epperheimer. The company denies the allegation, saying its policies allow employees to miss work for jury duty. The company declined comment on this case.
Interpreter attacked — Mohammed Fawad Mohammadi survived the war in his native Afghanistan, where he served as an interpreter for U.S. military forces. Now he is in a hospital, with part of his leg amputated after he was attacked by a man in an Oregon town who drove at Mohammadi again, and again, and again with his car. Perry George Nicolopoulos was indicted late Thursday on 16 charges, including attempted murder, in connection with the attack in the coastal town of Lincoln City. Mohammadi’s wife and their year-old son narrowly escaped injury. The police say the crime is shocking, but that they have found no evidence of a bias crime. The Council on American-Islamic Relations, however, is calling for a more thorough investigation, citing an unprecedented rise in anti-Muslim hate incidents.
