Emily Nasrallah, 86: a prizewinning Lebanese writer whose novels struggled with bigotry against women, the horrors of civil war and the vacuum left by fleeing refugees. Died Tuesday in Beirut.

Rabbi Mordechai Hager, 95: the reserved but strong-willed leader of one of the nation’s largest Hasidic sects, who settled many of his followers in a relatively bucolic upstate enclave to escape New York City’s temptations and decadence. Died Friday in New York City of liver failure, resulting from an undetermined infection.
