Redmond ‘moving in the right direction’ after nonconference win over Marist

REDMOND — A strong start and some lights-out pitching allowed Redmond High to sprint to a five-run lead before holding on to win 7-4 over Marist in nonconference baseball action Friday.
While the Panthers (2-1 overall) built a 5-0 lead after the second inning, Andrew McKague allowed just one hit and struck out four over four shutout innings. Marist (0-1) scored four runs in the top of the sixth inning, but Redmond held on for the win.
“We’re feeling pretty good,” said Redmond coach Doug Taylor. “We’re moving in the right direction. The kids are working hard and have a winning attitude. … I think we can do some good things.”
Colt Folston had three hits to pace the Panthers, who looked for their third straight victory Saturday against visiting Putnam. Connor Green drove in two runs for Redmond.

Baseball
Putnam 9, Mountain View 2: Ryan Martini drove in a run and had a double as part of a two-hit day, but the Cougars (0-2) dropped a nonconference game. Putnam scored seven runs in the second to break a scoreless tie. Tyler Baca had a home run for Mountain View.
Barlow 14, Ridgeview 0 (5 innings): REDMOND — The Ravens allowed two runs in the first inning and struggled to get on base for the rest of the game as they fell to 0-2.
Stayton 9, Sisters 7: SISTERS — The Outlaws led 5-0 after the second inning, but Stayton responded with one run in the top of the third inning, three runs in the fourth and five in the fifth before holding on to claim the nonconference victory. Garrett Vohs had two RBIs for Sisters (1-1), and Turner Stutzman struck out seven in 22⁄3 innings.
Joseph 6, Culver 4: JOHN DAY — The Bulldogs (0-1) fell in their season opener and on the first day of the Grant Union Tournament. Culver plays again Saturday against Santiam.
Softball
Sisters 21, Klamath Union 14: SISTERS — Jourdan Andrews hit a two-run home run in the fourth inning to provide a highlight in the Outlaws season opener. Sisters was leading 9-5 when the second game of the doubleheader was halted after the first inning.
Girls lacrosse
Bend United 15, Churchill 6: EUGENE — Emma Beaver and Kayelene Oates each had four goals to lead Bend United to a nonconference win. Joren Fettig added two goals and two assists for Bend (2-0), which defeated Sisters 15-6 on Thursday. Also for Bend, Sahalie Levine scored twice, and Athena Peterson had a goal.
Boys lacrosse
Sherwood 8, Summit 7: SHERWOOD — The Storm dropped their nonconference season opener.
Sisters 8, Hillsboro 1: HILLSBORO — Trey Stadeli scored four goals and made three assists and Ethan Morgan had three goals and an assist as the Outlaws opened their season with a win. Freshman Judah Keeton also scored a goal and goalie Casey Warburton saved 23 of 24 shots taken by Hillsboro.
Newberg 14, Ridgeview 4: NEWBERG — The Ravens fell in their nonconference season opener.
Cancellations
Four events Friday involving Central Oregon teams were canceled because of weather. Bend’s home baseball doubleheader against The Dalles was scratched and will be rescheduled, though a makeup date has yet to be announced. Also canceled were Redmond’s softball game at Reynolds and Summit’s home girls lacrosse game against Sheldon. Churchill at Summit baseball began on time but was called in the bottom of the second inning with the Lancers from Eugene leading 6-0. The game has been scheduled to resume Saturday at Redmond High, preceding the Storm’s game against Wilsonville.
