Baseball
Ducks drop Pac-12 opener — Arizona State scored five runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to overcome a two-run deficit and beat Oregon 7-4 on Friday night at Phoenix Memorial Stadium in the Pac-12 Conference opener for both teams. The Sun Devils scored all five runs in the pivotal eighth inning with two outs; the big hit was a three-run triple by Gage Canning. Oregon trailed 2-0 after one inning but took a 3-2 lead in the third on Gabe Matthews’ go-ahead two-run double. The Ducks (0-1 Pac-12, 12-5 overall) and Sun Devils (1-0, 9-9) resume their three-game series Saturday.
Beavers hold off Bears — Oregon State relievers worked out of late-inning trouble Friday night and the top-ranked Beavers held on for a 4-3 win at California in the first game of the Pac-12 Conference season for both teams. Jake Mulholland allowed a leadoff single in the bottom of the ninth but then retired the next three batters to preserve the win for starter Luke Heimlich. Oregon State led 4-0 in the fourth inning with the help of two unearned runs. Cadyn Grenier had two hits and Steven Kwan had two RBIs for OSU. The Beavers (1-0 Pac-12, 16-1 overall) and Bears (0-1, 12-5) face off again Saturday in the second game of their three-game series.
Softball
Oregon State powers past Cal — Hope Brandner hit a three-run homer, Michelle Sass hit a solo shot, and No. 25 Oregon State scored in every inning en route to a 10-5 victory over No. 16 California in the Pac-12 Conference opener for both teams Friday at the OSU Softball Complex. McKenna Arriola joined Brandner with three RBIs and was one of six Beavers with two hits in a 13-hit attack. Meehra Nelson (10-4) was the winning pitcher, and Mariah Mazon struck out five over three innings to earn her fourth save. Oregon State (1-0 Pac-12, 18-9 overall) and Cal (0-1, 23-4) continue their three-game series Saturday.
Unbeaten Bruins down Ducks — No. 3 UCLA belted three home runs and survived a late Oregon rally Friday night to remain undefeated with a 6-2 win over the No. 6 Ducks at Jane Sanders Stadium in Eugene. In the Pac-12 Conference opener for both teams, Aaliyah Jordan’s two-run homer in the top of the seventh inning stretched the Bruins’ lead to 6-0. Lauren Lindvall’s solo homer in the bottom of the seventh got Oregon on the scoreboard, and Alexis Mack singled in a run, but that was all the scoring for the Ducks. Oregon (0-1 Pac-12, 23-5 overall), and UCLA (1-0, 25-0) play the second game of a three-game series Saturday.
