High school notes
• Jonathan Skidmore, a freshman at Summit High School, won three of the four categories he competed in at the 2018 American Legion Oratorical Contest held at the Oregon Department of Veterans’ Affairs in Salem. The American Legion Oratorical Contest exists to develop deeper knowledge and appreciation for the U.S. Constitution among high school students. He is the son of Caroline Skidmore, of Bend.
• The Family Access Network at Crook County High School has received a $5,000 community action grant from Facebook, to be used to connect disadvantaged Prineville students to basic-need services. These funds will provide 50 vulnerable children with FAN advocate services for an entire school year, allowing them to attend and stay in school.
• Michael Hicks has been selected to become Mountain View High School’s next principal. Hicks is assistant principal at Bend Senior High School.
• “Memories,” Summit High School students’ video on safety in the workplace, is one of seven finalists in the Oregon Young Employee Safety Coalition annual safety video contest, The top three entries will take home cash prizes ranging from $300 to $500 and will earn a matching amount for their school. The winners will be announced during an awards ceremony later this spring.
