Its first two games of the season were called off because of inclement weather. So when Summit finally played its first game Saturday, the Storm were eager to make up for lost time. As shown by their 15-2 girls lacrosse win over visiting Roseburg.

“We had strong play by everyone, well-balanced,” Summit coach Andre Stites said. “It’s early in the season, but we’re starting to figure out where to position those players on the field.”

Summit took control of the game early and led 9-1 at halftime.

Julia Stites led the Storm with six goals and two assists, and Maggie Hawkins and Spencer Hurley scored two each.

“Last year she had 69 goals. She’s really strong, but I don’t want to rely on her” for all of Summit’s offense, Andre Stites said of Julia, his daughter. “This year we’re really working to balance that out.”

Stites said the Storm varsity team includes an unusually large class of five freshmen, including goalie Bridget Lochrem, who made five saves in her high school debut.

“She was really strong, moves well,” Stites said of Lochrem. “She never played goalie before, and during tryouts she beat out goalies who have been playing for years. She’s going to be really good.”
