SOFTBALL
Oregon beats UCLA on walk-off homer — Shannon Rhodes hit a three-run homer in the bottom of the seventh inning, breaking a scoreless tie and lifting Oregon to a 3-0 Pac-12 win over UCLA on Sunday at Jane Sanders Stadium in Eugene. After handing the No. 3 Bruins their first loss of the season the previous night, the No. 6 Ducks rallied in the home half of the seventh with a hit batter, a single and a sacrifice bunt to set the stage for Rhodes, whose homer made a complete-game winner of Megan Kleist (8-4). Oregon (2-1 Pac-12, 25-5 overall) is off until a Civil War series with Oregon State, March 29-31 in Corvallis.
Beavers take another from Bears — Hope Brandner belted a two-run homer, Alysha Everett was 3-for-3, and No. 25 Oregon State came from behind to beat No. 16 California 8-3 on Sunday, giving the Beavers a 2-1 win in their Pac-12 season-opening series at the OSU Softball Complex in Corvallis. Mariah Mazon (8-6) was the winning pitcher with four innings of scoreless relief for starter Nerissa Eason. Up next for Oregon State (2-1 Pac-12, 19-10 overall) is a three-game series at UCLA starting Saturday.
BASEBALL
Oregon State takes broom to Cal — Michael Gretler’s two-run homer was the big blow of the day for top-ranked Oregon State, which beat California 6-4 on Sunday to cap a three-game sweep of the Pac-12-opening series at Evans Diamond in Berkeley, California. Grant Gambrell allowed two runs (one earned) and three hits over 5 1/3 innings to earn the win for the Beavers (3-0 Pac-12, 18-1 overall). Oregon State is home Friday night to open a three-game series against Washington at Goss Stadium in Corvallis.
Ducks swept by Sun Devils — Oregon’s Pac-12 season-opening series at Arizona State turned into a three-game sweep for the host Sun Devils, who beat the Ducks 6-1 on Sunday. Kyle Kasser had two of Oregon’s five hits, and Daniel Patzlaff drove in the Ducks’ lone run. Oregon starter Kolby Somers (1-1) was the losing pitcher, allowing four runs on seven hits over 3 1/3 innings. The Ducks (0-3 Pac-12, 12-7 overall) play their conference home opener Friday against California in the first game of a three-game series at PK Park in Eugene.
Twins infielder suspended for 80 games — Minnesota Twins shortstop Jorge Polanco has been suspended for 80 games after testing positive for a performance-enhancing substance. The commissioner’s office announced Sunday that Polanco tested positive for Stanozolol, becoming the sixth player to be banned this year under the major league drug program. That is already one more than last season. Polanco, 24, started 127 games at shortstop last year for the Twins, finishing with a .256 batting average, 13 home runs, 13 stolen bases and 74 RBIs in his first full season as a regular in the lineup.
TENNIS
Del Potro edges Federer in 3 sets — Juan Martin del Potro rallied from three match points down in the third set and beat top-ranked Roger Federer 6-4, 6-7 (8), 7-6 (2) to win the BNP Paribas Open, handing the Swiss superstar his first loss of the year. Del Potro became the first Argentine winner in the 42-year history of the desert tournament. Federer’s 17-match winning streak — the best start of his career — ended. Del Potro held a match point at 8-7 in the second-set tiebreaker, but he lost the final three points on his own errors that allowed Federer to force a third set. “I feel frustrated that I let an opportunity like this go by,” Federer said.
Osaka on her way up with first pro tennis title — Naomi Osaka routed Daria Kasatkina 6-3, 6-2 to win the BNP Paribas Open on Sunday in a matchup of 20-year-old rising stars and earn the first title of her career. Osaka’s victory capped a run that included beating two-time winner Maria Sharapova, No. 5 Karolina Pliskova and top-ranked Simona Halep during the two-week tournament. She dropped one set in seven matches. The Japan-born Osaka will rise to a career-high No. 22 in Monday’s WTA Tour rankings. Osaka needed just 70 minutes to dispatch No. 19 Kasatkina, who had an equally impressive showing in the desert. Among those the Russian beat was U.S. Open winner Sloane Stephens, No. 2 Caroline Wozniacki, No. 10 Angelique Kerber and No. 8 Venus Williams. Kasatkina will rise eight spots to No. 11.
