A Portland General Electric employee took his own life with a single gunshot to his chest Tuesday after arriving to work in Madras with a handgun, which caused an evacuation of the building and police response.
Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded at about 2:20 p.m. to a suicidal man armed with a handgun who arrived at the Portland General Electric headquarters for the Pelton-Round Butte Dam facility in Madras.
The man had gone into his office. A deputy entered the building and coordinated with other arriving law enforcement personnel to secure the building, according to the sheriff’s office.
The Central Oregon Emergency Response Team arrived, but was unable to communicate with the man. The emergency response team used a drone outside the building to look inside the window of the man’s office and discovered he was not moving.
The team then broke through the locked door of the office and used a robot to enter the room, but the man was already dead.
The sheriff’s office and emergency response team was assisted by Oregon State Police and Jefferson County Emergency medical services.
