A former charter school leader accused of 10 felony sex crimes against a minor student was back in a Deschutes County courtroom Thursday to enter a not guilty plea and set a date for trial.

Michael Richard Bremont, 44, is accused of 10 counts of second-degree sex abuse for misconduct with a former student.

Bremont was arrested at the start of the year and charged with new sex abuse charges. A former Redmond Proficiency Academy student has accused Bremont of a sexual relationship that began when she was 17 and he was the 36-year-old principal of the school.

His attorneys have filed several motions so far, including one to allow him limited visitation with his three children.

His jury trial is set for Oct. 23.

Bremont’s Oregon criminal history features nothing more severe than traffic infractions until 2012, when he was convicted of felonies in two cases.

One conviction was for sex abuse with a former academy student, beginning in 2009 and ending in 2010. The case against him involved contact with the 15-year-old student that began as flirting text messages and led to sex abuse in his motor home on a school trip.

The other 2012 conviction was first-degree theft for stealing $3,000 in equipment from the academy.

In 2014, he was released from prison seven months early for good behavior. But later that year he was picked up for violating his parole by leaving the state and sent back to prison.

He was arrested again in late 2014 after eluding a trooper on his motorcycle at high speeds on state Highway 126. Along with one count of attempting to elude police, he pleaded no contest to one of identity theft for possessing several forms of identification under a fake name.

Bremont worked at Central Linn High School from 2002 until 2006, when he became an assistant principal at Redmond High School. He worked there until 2009, when he was named the first director of the newly opened Redmond Proficiency Academy.

While the first academy sex abuse case was working its way through the court system, he was arrested on suspicion of abusing a student during his time at Central Linn High. A woman said that as a 17-year-old student in 2005 and 2006, Bremont had raped and sodomized her. He was convicted of two counts of second-degree sex abuse and given six months in prison.

He worked at the academy until his arrest in April 2012. A Bulletin investigation that year revealed he profited from a consulting side business while serving as the school’s director.

He also worked various positions in his career for the Lake County and Sisters school districts.
