MADRAS — Madras allowed six runs in the top of the fourth inning but regained their composure — and the lead — over the next three frames to defeat Ridgeview 8-7 for a nonconference baseball win Thursday.
Madras starter Jared Holliday pitched three scoreless innings, allowing the Buffs (3-0 overall) to take a 2-0 lead into the top of the fourth inning. The Ravens, however, scattered three hits and benefited from three White Buffaloes errors in a sequence Madras coach Sam McCormick described as “high school kids being high school kids.” As a result, Ridgeview (1-3) jumped in front 6-2.
Byron Patt came on in relief for Madras to end the Ravens’ rally, but McCormick said he quickly removed Patt from the game so he could pitch against North Marion on Saturday.
Despite what could have been a demoralizing inning, Madras scored one run in the bottom of the fourth inning to cut its deficit to 6-3, and the Buffs followed with two more in the fifth to get to within a run.
In the sixth inning, Holliday belted an RBI double to tie the game, and with two outs and two runners on base, Lewis Fine gave Madras the lead with a two-run single to right-center field.
“He’s been striking the ball well lately,” McCormick said of the senior infielder.
Logan Carson had a hit for Ridgeview, while Ben Gunnels and Max Hopper each drove in a run.
