Studded tire season in Oregon and Washington has been extended until the end of the day on April 15.
Normally, studded tires are allowed between Nov. 1 and March 31. But due to weather forecasts showing significant snowfall on Oregon’s mountain passes in the next few weeks, the studded tire season will continue.
It is only the fifth time in the past 16 years that the studded tire season has gone past March 31, according to the Oregon Department of Transportation. Three extensions occurred in 2010, 2011 and 2012.
ODOT encourages drivers to consider other types of traction tires or chains to help minimize roadway damage that studded tires cause. A 2014 study found studded tires cause about $8.5 million in damage each year to state highways, according to ODOT.
Other types of traction tires are also available that meet the Rubber Manufacturers Association standards for use in severe snow conditions. Such tires have an emblem on the sidewall of a three-peaked mountain with a snowflake in the center. These tires cause no more damage than standard all-weather radial tires, but they provide better traction than studded tires on bare pavement, according to ODOT.
Drivers with studded tires on their vehicles after the deadline can be charged with a traffic violation.
