- Ducks and Beavers
Baseball
Ducks take two from Cal — Jakob Goldfarb was 4-for-5 with a triple and two RBIs, leading Oregon to a 7-2 win over California in the second game of a Pac-12 doubleheader Saturday at PK Park in Eugene. Kyle Kasser was 4-for-5 for the Ducks in the opener, an 8-5 Oregon victory. Matt Mercer (3-1) was the winning pitcher in the first game, striking out eight over six innings, and Parker Kelly earned a three-inning save. Kenyon Yovan (1-1) allowed one run and five hits over five innings to claim the victory in the second game as the Ducks (2-3 Pac-12, 14-7 overall) notched their first two conference wins of the season. The three-game series concludes Sunday.
Top-ranked Beavers sweep Huskies — Luke Heimlich struck out 13 over 71⁄3 innings and improved to 5-0 in Oregon State’s 16-1 win over Washington in the first game of a Pac-12 doubleheader Saturday at Goss Stadium in Corvallis. The No. 1-ranked Beavers took the second game 5-2, as Adley Rutschman was 3-for-4 and Steven Kwan hit a two-run single in OSU’s three-run second inning. Brandon Eisert (3-1), the second of three Oregon State pitchers in the second game, earned the win with 21⁄3 innings of scoreless relief. It was the seventh straight win for OSU (5-0 Pac-12, 20-1 overall). In the first game, Kyle Nobach hit a two-run homer and had two run-scoring doubles; he was one of three Beavers to have three hits in a 21-hit attack to back Heimlich. The finale of the three-game series is Sunday.
Softball
Dramatic homer beats Beavs — UCLA’s Rachel Garcia hit a two-out solo home run in the bottom of the seventh inning, lifting the Bruins to a 3-2 victory over Oregon State in the opener of a three-game Pac-12 Conference series Saturday in Los Angeles. The Beavers trailed 2-0 before Michelle Sass belted a two-run homer in the fifth inning to tie the score. Sass’ blast was one of only three hits for Oregon State (2-2 Pac-12, 19-11 overall). The second game of the series is Sunday.
Soccer
Thorns drop opener — Debinha’s 70th-minute goal lifted the North Carolina Courage to a 1-0 win over the Portland Thorns in Saturday’s National Women’s Soccer League opener for both teams. The loss in Cary, North Carolina, was the defending champion Thorns’ first defeat in a season opener since 2013, the league’s inaugural season. Portland hits the road to face the Chicago Red Stars on March 31.
Motor sports
Champ on the pole after weather washes out qualifying — Weather washed out qualifying for NASCAR’s first stop this season at a short track and Martin Truex Jr. will start Sunday from the pole at Martinsville Speedway in Martinsville, Virginia. There was no qualifying session because of a wintry mix that moved through the Virginia area and halted the Truck Series race after just 23 laps Saturday. NASCAR postponed the Truck Race and set the Cup field by owner’s points. The Truck Race is now scheduled to resume after Sunday’s Cup event.
