Special Olympics
Spring/summer registration open; unified partners needed — Registration for Special Olympics spring/summer sports must be received by April 16. Special Olympians may participate in athletics (track and field events), which meets in Bend or Redmond on Wednesdays from 5:30 to 7 p.m.; bocce, which meets in Bend on Thursdays from 4:30 to 6 p.m.; softball, which meets in Bend on Saturdays from 10 a.m. to noon; or golf, which will meet at various times. Special Olympians may also sign up for a team wellness program, even if they are participating in another spring sport. The athletics regional competition will be held at Mt. Hood Community College in Gresham on June 2. The bocce regionals will be held at North Eugene High School on June 16. Softball regionals will be held at US Cellular Park in Medford on June 16. Golf regionals will be held in Eugene at a location and date to be determined. And the state games will be held in Corvallis on July 14 and 15. Also, Special Olympics High Desert needs volunteers who can serve as unified partners from the middle of April through the state games in July. Roughriders roll to victory — Tom Quinn scored two tries and 10 conversions, leading the Bend Rugby Club Roughriders to a 90-12 win over Chuckanut Bay (Bellingham, Washington) Saturday at High Desert Middle School in Bend. Levi Penter scored four tries and Mike Gamm added three for the Roughriders, who improved to 11-3 overall and 8-0 in league play. Bend Rugby Club remains in first place in Division 2 of the Pacific Northwest Rugby Union. The Roughriders play their final league match at 1 p.m. on April 7, when they face Salem at High Desert Middle School.
Bend Blues drop a close one — The Bend Blues high school rugby club fell to Clark County (Washington) by a 29-27 score Saturday at Big Sky Park in Bend. Scoring tries for the Blues were Nate Denney, Tanner Doyle, Vitya Johnson, Riley Toman and Haakon Kjellesvik, and Kjellesvik added a conversion. The Blues’ next game is April 7 versus the Valley Rams of McMinnville, an 11:30 a.m. start at High Desert Middle School in Bend.
Running
Entry open for CLR24 — Registration remains open for the CLR24, a 24-leg relay from Silver Lake to Bend for teams of four to 12 runners. The race, which is a shorter version of the 36-leg Cascade Lakes Relay, will start during the afternoon on Aug. 3 and continue through the next day. Entry costs $1,350 for a team of seven to 12 runners and $1,050 for “ultra” teams of four to six runners. Registration will remain open until a total of 600 participants have signed up.
