BASEBALL
Cal beats Ducks in series finale — Kenyon Yovan’s pinch-hit double produced two Oregon runs in the bottom of the ninth inning, but the rally ended there and California won 5-3 Sunday to take the finale of a three-game Pac-12 Conference series at PK Park in Eugene. The Golden Bears led 2-0 until Andrew Vaughn hit a three-run homer in the fifth inning for a 5-0 Cal lead. The Ducks scored once in the sixth, then got two runners on with two outs in the ninth to set the stage for Yovan. Oregon (2-4 Pac-12, 14-8 overall) hosts the University of San Francisco on Monday, then opens a three-game Pac-12 series at Stanford on Thursday.
Huskies halt Beavers’ streak — Oregon State’s bid for its first series sweep over Washington since 2005 was thwarted Sunday when the Huskies took an 8-4 win in the final game of a three-game Pac-12 set at Goss Stadium in Corvallis. The loss was the first in conference play this season for the top-ranked Beavers (5-1 Pac-12, 20-2 overall) and ended their seven-game winning streak. Zak Taylor was 2-for-4 with two RBIs for Oregon State, and Jack Anderson and Adley Rutschman also had two hits for the Beavers. Joe Wainhouse had a two-run single and a solo home run to lead Washington’s 13-hit attack. Four OSU pitchers combined to strike out 12. The Beavers open a three-game series against Utah on Thursday night in Salt Lake City.
SOFTBALL
UCLA downs Oregon State — Bases-loaded walks produced two of Oregon State’s three runs, but the Beavers could not make UCLA pay for a total of nine walks and the Bruins took a 5-3 Pac-12 win Sunday night in Los Angeles. McKenna Arriola was 2-for-4 with an RBI single that gave Oregon State a 1-0 lead in the first inning. Meehra Nelson (10-5) was the losing pitcher for the Beavers (2-3 Pac-12, 19-12 overall); she gave up five runs (two unearned) and seven hits over six innings. UCLA has won the first two games of the three-game series, which concludes Monday.
TENNIS
Venus avoids upset at Miami Open — Venus Williams squandered an early lead, fell behind late and then overcame three match points Sunday to rally past Kiki Bertens in the third round of the Miami Open, 5-7, 6-3, 7-5. Williams blew a 5-0 lead in the first set and was down 5-3 in the third set. But she swept the final four games, holding serve at love for the victory. When Williams slammed a forehand winner on the last point, she spun with a grin in celebration, her fist leading the way. Williams, a three-time champion seeded No. 8, will next face No. 11 Johanna Konta, the defending champ. Konta advanced with much less drama, beating No. 22 Elise Mertens 6-2, 6-1. In men’s play, No. 2 Marin Cilic swept Vasek Pospisil 7-5, 7-6 (4).
Basketball
Golden State’s Kerr rules out Curry for 1st round — Stephen Curry will not return for the first round of the playoffs next month because of a sprained left knee. Coach Steve Kerr on Sunday ruled out the two-time MVP for the best-of-seven first round in the Western Conference playoffs. The Warriors are expected to be the No. 2 seed. An MRI exam Saturday showed a Grade 2 sprain of his medial collateral ligament and the team said Curry would be re-evaluated in three weeks — that would be April 14 and a possible Game 1 of the playoffs for Golden State. Curry had returned from a six-game absence after his latest right ankle injury Friday night only to injure his left knee. In the third quarter of a victory against Atlanta, center JaVale McGee fell into him. Curry hobbled off the court grimacing, sat on the bench and put his head down.
G League player under doctors’ care after collapse — An NBA G League player for the Grand Rapids Drive who collapsed on the court near the end of a game with the Long Island Nets is currently under care by doctors in Grand Rapids, Michigan. The Drive said in a news release Sunday that further updates on Zeke Upshaw’s condition will be provided when available. The team did not provide additional details on Upshaw’s condition. Jewel Upshaw, the player’s mother, told WOOD TV8 in Grand Rapids: “The next 24 hours are critical.” Team spokeswoman Sarah Jbara told MLive.com that Upshaw tumbled to the floor Saturday night with about 50 seconds remaining in the game. He was taken off the court on a stretcher. The 26-year-old Upshaw scored 11 points to help the Drive earn a playoff spot with the 101-99 victory in the regular-season finale. Upshaw is in his second season with the Drive.
