Rape suspect was deported twice — Immigration officials say an Oregon man charged with rape had twice been deported. Seaside Police arrested Anastacio Eugenio Lopez-Fabian, 24, in February after investigators determined he had sex several times with a girl younger than 14. In addition to rape, he is charged with assault and harassment. Lopez-Fabian posted bail and was released. But U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement later detained him in a courthouse parking lot as he arrived for a hearing. He is now at a detention center in Tacoma, Washington. Immigration and Customs Enforcement spokeswoman Carissa Cutrell says Lopez-Fabian was deported to Guatemala in 2013 and 2014. The federal agency criticized Clatsop County last year for not detaining immigrants in the country illegally. But according to Sheriff Tom Bergin, “He posted bail, so there’s not much we can do unless ICE notifies us, which it didn’t.”

Portland teacher disciplined after walkout — A Portland middle school teacher has been placed on leave because of his involvement in a student walkout last month. Dave Northfield of Portland Public Schools says Chris Riser was placed on leave Friday. A petition to reinstate him had more than 1,300 signatures as of Sunday night. Riser teaches at Ockley Green Middle School. Roughly 100 students walked out Feb. 9 to protest the death of 17-year-old Quanice Hayes, an armed robbery suspect fatally shot by police a year earlier. In a message to parents, principal Paula McCullough said students were directed to walk in the street as well as lie down in a busy intersection as part of a die-in. She said the district supports student activism, but has “zero tolerance” for students being placed in unsafe conditions.
