LA PINE — Taft entered Tuesday as the No. 1-ranked team in Class 3A baseball, but La Pine was not intimidated.

The Hawks remained unbeaten with an 8-5 nonconference win and dealt the top-ranked Tigers their first loss of the season.

“I was a little bit worried, because they (La Pine’s players) had seen pitching, but not pitchers like this,” La Pine coach Bo DeForest conceded.

The Hawks (4-0 overall) took a 1-0 lead in the first inning against Taft, which had outscored opponents 67-11 in its first six games. La Pine starter Angelo Roes allowed two runs in the top of the third inning — the only runs he allowed in four innings of work — before the Hawks retook the lead with three runs in the home half of the fourth.

Roes helped his own cause with two hits and two RBIs, and Jake Farnsworth also batted in two runs. Adam Plant pitched two innings of relief, allowing two runs, and Wyatt DeForest closed out the seventh inning, giving up one run. DeForest also doubled and accounted for an RBI, and Giroux Gerhart went 2-for-3 for La Pine.

“This was a big win for us,” Bo DeForest said.
