Eight of the 83 horses seized from a Terrebonne ranch over the weekend were euthanized late Monday on the advice of attending veterinarians, the Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office said Tuesday.

The eight horses suffered severe pain, arthritis and laminitis, an inflammation, as a result of excessive hoof wall growth and other abnormalities caused by longterm hoof neglect, according to sheriff’s spokesman Sgt. William Bailey.

The horses were relocated as part of an animal welfare case against the operators of GreenGate Farms at 4710 NE Smith Rock Way in Terrebonne.

The Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office received a tip Saturday from a concerned resident. The neglect was confirmed by deputies, and the office enlisted volunteers to spend the rest of the weekend assisting in the relocation of the horses.

Veterinarians and farriers were at the Deschutes County Rescue Ranch on Rickard Road in Bend for most of the day Monday.

The office also announced Tuesday it forwarded felony charges against the two owners to the district attorney’s office. Terrebonne residents Linda B. Stream, 67, and Christina J. “Christie” Hart, 41, were both charged with one count of first-degree animal neglect. They are scheduled to appear in Deschutes County Circuit Court next month.

Hart and Stream were sued last year by the operators of Walking H Ranch for the cost of various bales and types of hay: $47,000.

A representative of Walking H Ranch said Tuesday the pair had settled their debt.
