An unidentified man suffered serious injuries early Thursday after a fiery head-on collision outside La Pine.

U.S. Highway 97 was closed near Highway 31 for about an hour while emergency personnel attended to the scene of a collision between a 2014 Chevrolet pick-up and a 2007 Hyundai sedan. Each vehicle carried only its driver.

The crash took place around 7:27 a.m. The impact pinned the driver of the sedan β€” the most seriously injured driver β€” and started a fire, according to a news release by the La Pine Rural Fire Protection District.

With the driver trapped inside the burning car, a man from a stopped vehicle used a fire extinguisher to fight the fire.

β€œThe vehicle continued to burn, but it bought the driver some time until the fire fighters could get there and put water on it,” said La Pine fire Chief Mike Supkis.

The sedan driver was airlifted to St. Charles Bend, while the driver of the pick-up was driven there by paramedics with Crescent Fire District.

Supkis said the name of the Good Samaritan is unknown to his agency. The district was also not able to provide the names of the two drivers, or their medical conditions.
