Summit’s Hagfors surges into heptathlon lead

Maddie Hagfors became comfortable atop the podium at Summit High on Friday.

With three first-place finishes in four heptathlon events on the first day of the Summit Decathlon-Heptathlon, Hagfors recorded 2,338 points to head into the final day with a 312-point lead over La Salle’s Abby Sheets.

Hagfors won the girls 200-meter dash in 28.10 seconds and was first in the 100 hurdles with a time of 17.08. Hagfors, who was also sixth in the shot put, then tied for first in the high jump with a clearance of 1.57 meters.

Crook County’s Gracie Kasberger is in sixth place with 1,804 points after taking fourth in the 200 and tying for fourth in the high jump. Gilchrist’s Katie McDaniel, who is 11th with 1,491 points, placed fifth in the 100 hurdles. The Cowgirls’ Lahlynn Cates, who is 15th with 1,315 points, tied for fourth in the high jump.

In the decathlon, Marist’s Pierce LaCoste won four of five events to build a 462-point lead with 3,674 points. Summit’s Jackson Buresh, who tied for first in the high jump at 1.88 meters and was fifth in both the 400 and the long jump, is in fourth place with 2,976 points.

In seventh place is Crook County’s Tyler Lawson with 2,705 points after placing third in the 400 and fifth in the 100. Summit’s Noah Turnbull, who is 24th in the decathlon standings, won the shot put. Other top Central Oregon placers include Mitchell Burton, who was third in the 100 and is 19th overall, and Redmond’s Chance Greene, who took fourth in the shot and is 12th in the points standings.

Bend 5, Dallas 2: With Marshall Davis pitching 61⁄3 strong innings, the Lava Bears cruised to a nonconference win to snap a two-game skid. Kaleb Karpstein had a hit and two RBIs for Bend (3-3), while Caden Mathisen went 2-for-3. Davis and Steve Talamantes each had a double for the Bears.

Seaside 7, Madras 4: MADRAS — Cameron Rodriguez struck out six over five innings, but Seaside scored four unanswered runs to claim a 7-4 baseball victory at the Madras Tournament. Jordan Mitchell had two hits for the White Buffs (4-2), who led 4-3 after the third inning.

Crook County 19, Illinois Valley 0: MADRAS — The Cowboys (3-3) rolled to a Madras Tournament win.

La Pine 19-14, Dayton 10-0: LA PINE — In scoring 33 runs on 31 hits, the Hawks remained undefeated with a nonconference doubleheader sweep of Dayton. In the opener, Angelo Roes went 4-for-4 with a double and four RBIs, while Jake Farnsworth totaled three hits, including a triple, and an RBI. Adam Plant doubled in a three-hit game and drove in two runs for the Hawks. In the second game, La Pine’s Wyatt DeForest and Riley Pinckney combined for a two-hit shutout in five innings. Farnsworth was 3-for-4 with a double and four RBIs for the Hawks (6-0), and Austin McKittrick had a double and two RBIs.
