Softball
Slam lifts Ducks over Beavers — D.J. Sanders hit a full-count, two-out grand slam in the top of the eighth inning, breaking a 1-1 tie and powering fifth-ranked Oregon to a 5-1 Pac-12 victory over rival Oregon State on Saturday at the OSU Softball Complex in Corvallis. The win gave the Ducks a 2-1 edge in the three-game Civil War series over the No. 25 Beavers. McKenna Arriola’s homer gave OSU a 1-0 lead in the third inning, and Oregon tied it in the fifth on Lauren Burke’s RBI single. The Ducks’ Megan Kleist and the Beavers’ Maria Mazon both tossed complete games in a pitching duel that took an extra inning — and Sanders’ blast — to settle. Oregon (4-2 Pac-12, 27-6 overall) plays a nonconference home doubleheader against Portland State on Tuesday. Oregon State (3-6, 20-15) hosts Arizona State in a three-game Pac-12 series starting Friday.
Baseball
Utes take series from Beavs — Oregon State’s streak of 14 consecutive Pac-12 series victories ended Saturday when Utah defeated the Beavers 11-8 at Smith’s Ballpark in Salt Lake City. It was OSU’s second loss in three games against the Utes, and the top-ranked Beavers (6-3 Pac-12, 21-4 overall) lost for the third time in their last four games. Cadyn Grenier matched a career high with three hits, including a solo home run, to lead Oregon State’s 11-hit attack. But Utah (3-3, 6-20) countered with 18 hits against five Beavers pitchers, including nine hits in just 31⁄3 innings against starter Bryce Fehmel (3-1). The Beavers also committed three errors. Next up for OSU is a two-game nonconference series with Nevada starting Monday night at Goss Stadium in Corvallis.
Ducks blanked by Cardinal — Five Stanford pitchers combined to shut out Oregon on Saturday in a 4-0 Pac-12 win for the No. 3-ranked Cardinal at Sunken Diamond in Stanford, California. The Ducks (3-6 Pac-12, 15-11 overall) lost for the second straight day after winning the series opener on Friday. Oregon fell despite getting nine hits to Stanford’s seven. Kyle Kasser was 3-for-4 to pace the Ducks. Kyle Stowers had the big hit of the game for the Cardinal (5-1, 20-3), a two-run homer in Stanford’s three-run eighth inning. Kolby Somers pitched well in defeat, allowing one run and three hits over six innings with six strikeouts. Oregon plays a nonconference game against the University of San Francisco on Monday.
Tennis
American Sloane Stephens wins Miami Open — U.S. Open champion Sloane Stephens won her hometown tournament, beating Jelena Ostapenko 7-6 (5), 6-1 in Saturday’s final at the Miami Open. Stephens, a south Florida native who lives in Fort Lauderdale, won the last women’s final on Key Biscayne. The tournament will move next year to the Miami Dolphins’ stadium. Seeded 13th, Stephens won with defense, repeatedly extending rallies until Ostapenko would make a mistake. Ostapenko had a 25-6 advantage in winners but committed 48 unforced errors to 21 by Stephens. Stephens was the surprise champion at the U.S. Open last September and then endured a long slump she ended at Key Biscayne. She improved to 6-0 in finals and will break into the top 10 for first time next week at No. 9. John Isner tries for the biggest title of his career Sunday when he faces Alexander Zverev in the men’s final. Isner could give the United States its first sweep at Key Biscayne since 2004 when Andy Roddick and Serena Williams won.
