The list of Summit High’s decorated heptathletes is difficult to crack. Yet Maddie Hagfors put her name among the best in program history.

After placing third in the long jump, fourth in the 800-meter run and eighth in the javelin at the Summit Decathlon-Heptathlon track and field meet at Summit High on Saturday, Hagfors ran her total to 3,691 points to win the two-day girls meet. And with that score, the senior became the third Storm athlete ever to eclipse 3,690 points.

Hagfors’ total bested the 3,392 points scored by runner-up Emillia Carpenter of Elmira.

As is standard for decathlons and heptathlons, field events were measured in meters.

In fourth place was Crook County’s Gracie Kasberger with 3,219 points. Kasberger won the long jump with a leap of 4.82 meters, and she also took third in the 800 and seventh in the javelin. The Cowgirls’ Kennedy Buckner was eighth in the 800, tied for ninth in the long jump and finished 10th in the javelin to finish ninth overall with 2,523 points.

Other high Central Oregon finishers included Redmond’s Maya Johnson, whose top performance was tying for ninth in the long jump en route to 14th place overall with 2,217 points. Crook County’s Aubrey Love, who was fifth in the 800, was 15th with 2,110 points; Gilchrist’s Katie McDaniel took 16th with 2,089 points; and Crook County’s Leahlynn Cates, who placed fifth in the javelin, was 17th in the 18-athlete field with 2,026 points.

In the boys decathlon, Marist’s Pierce LaCoste cruised to victory with 6,208 points, defeating second-place Ian Rinefort of Ashland by 217 points. In fifth place with 4,863 points was Crook County’s Noah Chaney, who won the pole vault with a clearance of 4.40 meters. Chaney was also third in the 1,500, sixth in the javelin, seventh in the discus and ninth in the 110 hurdles.

Summit’s Jackson Buresh took eighth in the 1,500 and 10th in the javelin to finish sixth overall with 4,809 points. A second-place finish in the discus and a fifth-place showing in the javelin helped Redmond’s Chance Greene round out the top 10 with 4,312 points.

The Cowboys’ Tyler Lawson was second in the 1,500 and 11th overall with 4,305 points, and the Storm’s Noah Turnbull, who won the discus with a throw of 43.64 meters, was 22nd with 3,110 points. Redmond’s Chance Greene was 25th overall with 2,423 points, and Crook County’s Isaac Logan rounded out the 27-athlete field with 2,279 points.
