The Bend Fire Department responded to a structure fire Saturday afternoon in northeast Bend and found the duplex without working smoke alarms.

The fire was reported at 1:15 p.m. in the 1000 block of NE Tuscon Way. Although the fire was “heavy” when firefighters arrived, they were able to stop the fire from spreading to the adjoining unit. The occupants of the duplex escaped without injury and were reunited with their three pets, which also survived the fire.

A car parked next to the duplex was heavily damaged by the fire, according to a release from the Bend Fire Department. The American Red Cross assisted the occupants with temporary housing.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
