History

THIS DATE IN BASEBALL

———

April 3

1923 — Expelled Black Sox players Happy Felsch and Swede Risberg sued their former club for back salary and $400,000 in damages. They were among eight members of the Chicago White Sox team charged with fixing the 1919 World Series.

1966 — The New York Mets won the right to sign Southern California pitcher Tom Seaver when Commissioner William Eckert pulled the team’s name out of a hat. Eckert had voided Seaver’s contract with Atlanta, when the Braves signed him during his college season. Cleveland and Philadelphia were the other two teams that had a chance, matching the Braves’ original $40,000 offer.

2000 — Andres Galarraga made a triumphant return to Turner Field. Out all of last season because of a cancerous tumor in his back, Galarraga hit a tiebreaking home run in the seventh inning that lifted the Atlanta Braves over Colorado 2-0.

2006 — Seattle’s Kenji Johjima became the first Japanese catcher to start a major league game and also homered for his first hit in the Mariners’ 5-3 loss to Los Angeles.

American League

Tigers 6, Royals 1

DETROIT — Francisco Liriano pitched into the seventh inning in his Detroit debut and Victor Martinez drove in three runs to give the Tigers their first win of the season. Hammel allowed five runs and seven hits in five innings for Kansas City.

HOUSTON — Charlie Morton pitched six scoreless innings and Marwin Gonzalez homered to lead Houston. Baltimore starter Chris Tillman was tagged for seven hits and four runs in four-plus innings in an uncharacteristically poor season debut. Adam Jones had two hits for the Orioles, who have dropped three straight after winning their opener.

CINCINNATI — Rookie Tyler Mahle pitched one-hit ball for six innings, Raisel Iglesias struck out Anthony Rizzo with the bases loaded to end the eighth and Cincinnati got for its first win of the season. Cincinnati was swept at home by Washington in a three-game series to open, falling to 0-3 for the first time since 2003. It also trailed in all 27 innings — the Nationals scored in the first inning each time. It was essentially a Re-Opening Day in Cincinnati, which did not get to hold its annual parade last week. The market association that organizes the parade was busy with Easter sales, so it was moved to Monday.

Wil Myers and Cory Spangenberg homered for San Diego, which dropped to 0-4. Bettis allowed two runs and five hits. Red Sox 7, Marlins 3

MIAMI — Brian Johnson gave Boston its fifth solid start in five games, allowing one run in six innings. All five Boston starters have allowed fewer than two runs, a franchise first to begin a season. Hanley Ramirez and Mookie Betts each hit their first home run of the season for the Red Sox. Trevor Richards, Miami’s minor league pitcher of the year in 2017, retired the first seven batters in his major league debut but then allowed five runs in 41⁄3 innings.
